sometimes I feel like your genotype should be a part of introduction anytime you have to introduce yourself...e.g.my name is john musa, genotype AA. I think it would make life a lot easier.............jokes apart how many people truly know their genotype, those that do how many know its implication......how many people actually consider genotype seriously before the choose a life partner.
'sickle cell disease is not a strange disease, ignorance kills'...this reminds me of the exact lines I had to say for the viral video shot for the sickle cell fund raising event holding this weekend in Abuja being organized by some colleagues who are members of the SICKLE CELL AID FOUNDATION. It is a non governmental nonprofit organization directed at educating and informing the populace about the disease with the sole aim of breaking 'the cycle' and offering assistance to those living with the disease..it is indeed a worthy cause and I support them a million percent.
Before I get carried away let me briefly educate on what sickle cell disease is.
sickle cell anemia or sickle cell disease is a hereditary blood disorder, characterized by an abnormality in the oxygen-carrying capacity of the red blood cells that leads to the cells assuming an abnormal, rigid, 'sickle' shape under certain circumstances such as infections, dehydration, hence the name. Sickle-cell disease is associated with a number of acute and chronic health problems, such as severe infections and attacks of severe pain ("sickle-cell crisis"), and an increased risk of deformity and death. Sickle-cell disease occurs when a person inherits two abnormal copies of the hemoglobin gene, one from each parent. A person with a single abnormal copy does not experience symptoms and is said to have sickle cell trait. meaning that if both parents have the sickle cell trait i.e. they are both AS their is 25% chance with each pregnancy of having a child with sickle cell disease i.e SS.
Almost 300,000 children are born with a form of sickle cell disease every year, mostly in sub- Saharan Africa .
meaning that the disease is common enough in our region and ignorance plays a very huge role in propagation of this disease. here is back to my question.................do you know your genotype?
